10 billion gallons saved Alert Labs

October 10, 2024 — Provider of AI-powered water leak detection solutions and certified B corporation Alert Labs announced Thursday that it achieved a major milestone in its ongoing effort to conserve water and reduce carbon emissions.

More than 12,000 buildings using over 115,000 Alert Labs IoT water management solutions have saved 10.6 billion gallons (40 billion liters) of water and stopped 110 thousand metric tonnes (243 million pounds) of greenhouse gases (GHG) from entering the atmosphere.1 For context, that’s enough water to fill the Empire State Building 39 times and the amount of CO2 absorbed by 5 million trees a year.

Saving water saves energy. Alert Labs customers are doing good for the planet while improving their bottom line.

We are extremely proud of our customers who are using the water insights from AlertAQ™ to drive down water costs as well as minimize water waste and its associated carbon emissions. This is a major accomplishment that aligns with Alert Labs environmental goals of doing good for the greater global community.

— Bob Wasserman, CEO of Alert Labs

The savings are possible thanks to Alert Labs proprietary IoT sensors, which are designed and manufactured in-house, and AlertAQ™  water intelligence platform that learns the unique water use patterns of each building and automatically identifies leaks, alerting building teams to water inefficiencies. Carbon emissions are associated with water use because it takes energy to extract, treat, distribute and heat every drop. When water is wasted that embedded energy is wasted along with it. Alert Labs customer Thomas Stanchak, Director of Sustainability at Stoneweg US, a property development firm, explained what this achievement means to his organization:

Water conservation is simply a wise investment, and Stoneweg US is proud to be part of the more than10 billion gallons saved by Alert Labs' customers. Their technology helps us work effectively toward our goal of improving water use efficiency 20% by 2033. Environmental benefits and optimized property value—what a powerful combination!"

The AlertAQ™ water intelligence platform uses AI-powered algorithms to learn from each building's unique water use patterns and automatically identify leaks.

Chris Le Conte, CEO of Smart Watering Systems, a water management consultancy, said, “As a company focused on reducing water waste and water damage for our clients, we are happy to celebrate this incredible milestone. In our commitment to empowering organizations and individuals to conserve water more effectively through innovative solutions, we proudly use Alert Labs' products and software at all our clients' properties.”

Zeb Foss, Supervisor of Energy at the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, said “We’re thrilled to share our success with Alert Labs products in helping us achieve our water conservation and GHG emissions goals!”

Alert Labs customers continue to minimize water damage risk, reduce water waste, and lower carbon emissions with our team of water management solutions.

About Alert Labs

Since 2015, Alert Labs has been innovating in the IoT (Internet of Things) space to design and build award-winning hardware and software for commercial, industrial, residential, and institutional buildings across North America. A proud B Corporation since 2023, our water and HVAC solutions are now in more than 12,000 buildings and our AI-powered water leak detection systems are saving businesses more than $100 million dollars, conserving over 10 billion gallons of water, and stopping more than 100 thousand metric tonnes of CO2e emissions from entering the atmosphere.

¹Gallons of water saved and CO2e savings are estimated based on a methodology developed in collaboration with a third-party environmental consultancy, EnviroStewards. Total savings are cumulative from January 1, 2017 to October 1, 2024. Calculations reflect real-world scenarios wherein Alert Labs technology significantly contributed to the early detection of water leaks and prevention of water damage. Some of the factors considered include: leak volume; proportion of heated vs unheated water; water source: surface vs ground; type of power generation at building location and its impact on the environment.
